Bemelmans Bar, nestled at 35 E 76th St in New York City, is more than just a bar—it's a storied piece of living history that effortlessly blends refined elegance with an intimate, timeless atmosphere. Stepping into Bemelmans is like entering a classic New York sanctuary where exquisite cocktails, masterful live piano performances, and iconic murals create an unforgettable sensory experience.
The bar’s ambiance immediately captivates: warm golden light washes over sumptuous leather banquettes while whimsical murals—drawn from the beloved “Madeline” books—grace the walls, adding a playful yet sophisticated charm. This is a place where every detail, from the polished wood bar to the intimate lounge seating, invites you to linger and savor the moment.
Bemelmans Bar is famed for its cocktails, with the JFK Daquiri, Pisco Sour, Negroni, and the impeccably crafted Espresso Martini often cited as highlights. Patrons rave about the martinis here, with one visitor calling it “the best Martini I’ve had in New York,” underscoring the bar’s skill in elevating classic drinks to perfection. The cocktail list thoughtfully balances storied favorites with contemporary flair, complemented by an impressive array of champagne, wine, and mezcal.
Though the menu is compact, it offers an enticing selection of shared plates designed to amplify the drinking experience. Delicacies such as the Kaviari Caviar with Buckwheat Blinis, Mini Lobster Tacos, and House Made Smoked Salmon Tartine showcase refined, elegant flavors that perfectly complement the drinks. Crispy truffle fries and rich steak tartare add hearty touches that delight the palate, ensuring every bite is as rich and memorable as your cocktail.
However, it's the atmosphere that truly sets Bemelmans Bar apart. Guests regularly describe the vibe as a blend of classic New York sophistication and welcoming intimacy. The live piano music floating through the space heightens the experience, making it both a perfect spot for a special evening or a cherished tradition. Many visitors recount encounters with celebrities in the warm glow of the bar’s golden lighting, adding an extra layer of allure to the night. The attentive, personable staff further enhance the visit, balancing professional service with a friendly, relaxed attitude that keeps guests returning.
It’s important to note that Bemelmans comes with a price tag reflective of its iconic status and impeccable quality. While some find the drinks and food a splurge—martinis can reach upwards of $30 to $50 with tax and tip—most agree the experience is well worth the investment. One longtime New Yorker and visitor described it as a “cost of admission to a piece of living history,” perfectly capturing the intangible value the bar offers beyond just the menu.
Whether you’re seeking a refined pre- or post-museum drink, a cozy spot to catch stellar live music, or simply a quintessential New York experience surrounded by art and history, Bemelmans Bar delivers with grace and charm. Prepare for a night where every sip, every note of the piano, and every brushstroke of mural art comes together to craft an elegant escape in the heart of the Upper East Side.
On my bucket list as a life long NYer. We went on a random Sunday after after a museum. Had a lovely chat with an Australian at the bar. Loved the murals and the atmosphere. It's pricey so be aware!
We had the best Christmas Eve here. In fact, it will be one a tradition. The bar is very classic, old and the murals were stunning. The overall vibe makes it what it is. You’ll likely see a celebrity or two. We saw some a listers. The staff are lovely, drinks are perfect. What a place! Can’t wait to come back!
Writing an aggregated review across 3 visits. Typically easy to get a table. Even if it ends up in the lounge area. I would recommend going just for cocktails. There is no value in their wine selection and food is ok. The atmosphere is obviously the draw. Great live music, and you never know who might make a guest appearance.
Best Martini I’ve had in New York. There was a bit of a line to get in on a Saturday afternoon, but I think the experience matched the expectation. We were seated at the bar which was great for having a couple drinks and some snacks and enjoying conversation. The lounge area was lively, yet still felt really intimate. I had definitely been wanting to try this place for a while, given its reputation as classic upper east side haunt, and it lived up. It was a great stop on our afternoon exploring Central Park and the met.
Stopped at Bemelmans Bar after the Met. Dress code enforced, no shorts, no flip flops, collared shirt after 5:30 p.m. Nearly turned away, managed to slip in. Ordered a martini listed around $30, but with tax and tip the tab reached $50. Pricey, yes, but here it feels like the cost of admission to a piece of living history. Live piano in the corner, golden light on the leather banquettes, and walls covered with whimsical murals by Ludwig Bemelmans, creator of Madeline. He painted them in exchange for eighteen months of room and board at The Carlyle. This bar is the only public place where his art still lives. The whole scene feels like stepping into Old New York, glamorous and timeless. Five stars for history and vibe, not for value.
This place deserves six stars. Bemelmans Bar is the epitome of classic New York elegance—white-jacketed bartenders, warm and intimate lighting, and a post-5:30 dress code that elevates the whole experience. The drinks? Spectacular. Genuinely some of the best we’ve had in the city, which was a very welcome surprise given how many places overpromise and underdeliver. The Corner Booth cocktail is a must—think Manhattan, but smoother, more complex, and full of unexpected flavor with none of the usual harsh bite. The Gramble was another standout—a bright, gin-forward cocktail with just the right citrusy edge to help you unwind from the energy of the city. Yes, it’s pricey. But every detail—from the service to the setting—screams old-school Fifth Avenue charm. Worth every penny. Don’t miss it.
